HUGE news in the Celiac World....

As some of you may know from the previous blogs that i've posted over the past couple of years, there are ongoing efforts being made in Celiac Research by Dr. Fasano (God bless him) & including the current trials that are being run on the AT 1001 drug.

ANYWAY.....a woman in my Celiac Support Group (Charlotte Celiac Connection - www.charlotte-celiac-connection.org) was selected as a participate in the trials. Here's her update on how the trials are going:

"I thought I'd update you on how I'm doing with the clinical research study on Dr Fasano's new study drug, AT 1001. I returned this past Monday from AGA in Asheville with an excellent report. So far, so good. I truly feel that I must have some dosage of the drug, because I've had no side effects of any kind. Obviously, it's a double-blind study so there's no way of verifying that. But I've been ingesting 900 mg of pure gluten three times a day with no effects whatsoever. I take one pill (placebo or study drug) 15 minutes before I eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. Then take 2 gluten pills with my meal. The study coordinator explained that the daily gluten amount is equivalent to a slice of white bread. That's why I feel I must have the drug, otherwise, I'd be SICK! They are doing ample medical evaulations so I feel no concern! Anyway, things are going well and I'm at the halfway point. I'm so encouraged to know that my system will tolerate it and I've been able to be a participant. Let's hope that the FDA will look at this as a dietary supplement rather than a drug (AT 1001 is not absorbed in the bloodstream.) If they do, it'll be on the market much sooner as a dietary supplement."

This is such exciting news!! Maybe my dream of having the biggest keg party ever (w/ pizza of course) is coming up sooner than I ever thought it could be!! WOW!

On another note: I would like to say THANK YOU so much to all of you who have contributed to the Celiac Disease Research Center. It is because of you and your kindness that we're getting closer to a treatment! For that I am so grateful, THANK YOU!!!!
