MUMPS & the MBA Tourney

FYI -- During the week of 4/3/10 through 4/11/10, a 29 year-old rugby player from England developed bilateral parotitis and was diagnosed with suspected mumps (no laboratory testing was performed) while attending a series of rugby events in Wilmington, Chapel Hill, and Danville, VA. The official event was the MBA Rugby World Cup held in Danville, VA from 4/9/10 to 4/11/10. However the suspected case did participate in a “pub crawl” during his time in Chapel Hill and in other activities in the Chapel Hill/Durham area from 4/7/10 through 4/9/10. The incubation period for those exposed to the initial suspect case will end 5/5/10. Medical providers should be alert for cases of mumps in people who have attended events that possibly involved the rugby tournament or team. Please do not wait for lab results before reporting a suspected case of mumps to the Orange County Health Department. IF you haven't been vaccinated or have not had a second MMR booster, you should see your doctor.
