Liberty Cup a Clash for Military, Safety Clubs
By RUGBYMag.com Staff
Four military/public safety rugby teams will converge on Las Vegas for the Liberty Cup on February 12.
The Liberty Cup pits teams from military bases and police and fire units in a bi-annual competition designed to celebrate these most dedicated of public servants.
Currently the four teams slated to play are the Fire Department of New York, the New York Police Department, Camp LaJuene and Fort Bragg. It's possible that FDNY and NYPD might merge into one team, leaving open a spot for the Las Vegas Fire and Police Departments to provide a squad.
"This is growing and we're getting a lot of interest for 2013 when we expect to expand to more teams," said Dr. John Tinsley, who helps run the Fort Bragg rugby club. "Jon Hinkin has done a great job in helping us set this up at the LVI. We have a lot of new guys coming to play and also a lost of old guys. "
Tinsley said US Army rugby is on the resurgenece and he'd like the performance of Bragg to show that.
The Liberty Cup will be a semifinal-final format. In the morning the teams kick off at 9am in the semifinals. Then at 1pm the consolation and championship matches will be played. All games will be the full 80 minutes, and all games will be held on the fields next to Sam Boyd Stadium.
