* The state flag was adopted in 1885.
* The state bird is the norhtern cardinal. Males are a bright scarlet color w/ a black throat & face. Females are brownish grey w/ patches of red.
* The state flower is the dogwood.
* Of course everyone knows the Wright brothers were successful in the 1st powered flight in 1903.
* North Carolinians are often called "tar heels" because of the production of tar which dates back to the civil war.
* At least 30 native tribes lived amongst NC.
* The Outer Banks and it's strand of barrier islands and sandbars has made history as a landing spot for early colonists, hiding places for pirates like Blackbeard and the location where the Wright brothers powered the 1st airplane flight.
* NC is the LARGEST producer of sweet potatoes in the United States!!!
* Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet above sea level.
* Babe Ruth hit his 1st home run on March 7, 1914 in Fayetteville, NC.
